They’re back! Sidekicks quietly continue winning ways

Sidekicks2The Dallas Sidekicks were in existence from 1984 to 2004 and were one of the longest operating professional soccer teams in the united states before suspending operations in 2004. Originally founded as a new team in the Major indoor soccer league and played in that league until 1992. The Sidekicks hosted the 1989 MISL all star game at their home arena during that span.

In 1993 the Sidekicks moved to the Continental Indoor Soccer League and played in that league  until 1997 before moving to the Premier Soccer Alliance for the 1998 season. In 1999 the sidekicks moved into the World Indoor Soccer League and played in that league until 2001 and finally joined the 2nd incarnation of  Major Indoor Soccer League which they played in until the franchised suspended operations in 2004.

During their 20 years  and bouncing back and forth between leagues the franchise won 4 championships and kept exciting fans in reunion arena during 19 of those 20 years. One of the most exciting players is once again the coach of the Sidekicks, and Tatu is leading the sidekicks out at the Allen Events center this year and building excitement that has laid dormant for 7 years before beginning again in 2012.

This year’s team is 8-1 and continuing the winning ways of past Sidekicks teams. This year’s slogan is “We’re back!” and if the Sidekicks can get back into the playoffs then they will capture the hearts of indoor soccer fans in Dallas. The Sidekicks play in the Professional Arena Soccer League and are looking to capture their first championship since 2001.

While the faces may be different, the history is still there and the fans will expect to see another championship banner raised at some point with this team. If you haven’t had a chance, go catch a game while the season is still going one. Once more people learn about this team, it may be a hot ticket.

  1. Good article Kody. I had completely lost track of them. I remember the older teams. Glad to hear they are together again. Enjoyed the history you gave of their presence here in the Dallas area.
