St John’s Lavin has cancer

In a surprising and sad report today, we learned the St John’s head coach Steve Lavin was diagnosed with the early stages of Prostate Cancer this past fall.  What is surprising is that he learned about this and continued to coach without letting anyone know. While it was caught early and considered a low grade cancer, it is still something to be taken serious. Luckily for Lavin, they caught it early and don’t expect him to miss any time away from his coaching duties. This is just proof that nobody is safe from the clutches of Cancer.

Two other Big East coaches who have had the same problems have reached out in support for Lavin. Both Jim Calhoun and Jim Boeheim have been previously diagnosed with prostate cancer. They were both able to beat the disease and continue their coaching ability. With the positive outlook, everyone is expecting Lavin back on the Court next weekend. But all our thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family, and we wish him a speedy recovery.

Here is a link to On the Line which is an initiative on prostate cancer that has ESPN personalities have been doing commercials for. It is information every man and woman should know.

St. John’s is catching fire

When Steve Lavin took over at St. John’s, it was under a question of could he lead a team and be a coach of substance, or did he ride the coat tails of top recruits. Well, in his first season at St. Johns, he is proving that he is a good coach and can turn a program around. For most people this was going to be a rebuilding season and probably be an NIT team at best. But with quality back to back wins over Duke and UConn, this team is starting to make the case for going dancing in March.

While this team is still relatively unknown and quiet, they are making sure people are learning their name. With 4 victories over ranked opponents and at least two more chances to knock off a ranked team on their upcoming schedule, this team could make a run and be a team to watch come tournament time. So, with a lot of basketball left to play and teams still jockeying for positions, keep an eye on the Red Storm, because they are heating up and could be red hot come march.
