Tough Loss could benefit Mustangs

The Mustangs had high hopes and big expectations coming off winning both the regular season conference championship and conference tournament championship. Coming in as a number six seed, they expected to make a deep run into the tournament and hopefully surprise even more people than they did last season with an NIT Championship game run. Mustangs race past tigers to advance

In a recurring theme in the NIT tournament, the Mustangs came out looking sluggish and had trouble getting started in their semi-final game at Madison Square Garden, and they once again went in at the half with a deficit. Regardless of ending; Mustangs season has been a special one

When the season started, most “experts” and people around the program were thinking SMU would show a vast improvement from last season and probably finish around the middle of the conference. SMU Snubbed by Tourney; #1 in NIT

SMU MustangsSunday night we found out the SMU Mustangs were not picked to play in the NCAA tournament, which seemed to send a shock around the College Basketball world. Many of the experts had the Mustangs at least making the “first four” play in game if not being a middle seed somewhere in the tourney. But the selection committee ended up going against the Mustangs because of three tough losses to end the season. The Houston loss in the American Athletic Conference Tournament was probably the dagger, because they needed to have a good showing to have a chance to improve their status with the selection committee. SMU Mustangs receive end of season honors

SMU MustangsThe SMU Mustangs men’s basketball team is coming off one if it’s best seasons in a very long time, and while they became “media darlings” during the last half of the season and one of the hottest tickets in Dallas. But it wasn’t just the fans, local media and some national pundits who took notice; everyone seemed to take notice of the surprising change from last year on the Hilltop. This is why the Mustangs will be entering their conference tournament with the highest ranking since 2002-2003, not to mention getting nationally ranked for the first time since 1984-1985. A lot of people will attribute these changes to Head Coach Larry Brown, who is in his second season in Dallas. Brown was just recently named a Henry Iba Coach of the Year finalist and he was just named the US Basketball Writers District VII coach of the year. Continue reading
