Spurs win fifth Championship

The San Antonio Spurs just won their fifth title since 1999, and they have won all of these championships “bucking” the trend league wide to pay a lot of money for some of the best players. Instead they have found a core group of players who come from international backgrounds and built into a present day dynasty.

The Spurs had David Robinson back in 99, but he retired and handed the keys to the franchise over to Tim Duncan, who has quietly been one of the best players in the NBA. He does not draw a lot of fanfare outside of San Antonio, but at the same time, he doesn’t long for it. Surrounded by Tony Parker and Manu Ginobli, he has led the spurs to championships every few years. But the core three aren’t the big story, it is the other guys who are rarely ever the same guys.

The Spurs don’t focus on signing big names, or trying to get the top draft picks, they search for players who will fit into their system and be a selfless player in a day when the selfish superstar is the most coveted. Not to mention Head Coach Greg Popovich is not your normal coach persona, he doesn’t give the fluff interviews most coaches give, he will tell a media member “you are an idiot” in not so many words. He coaches to a style and a group of players, which has not been seen in the NBA for many years.

The San Antonio Spurs are a team who would fit better system wise in a European league, than they do in the NBA. But somehow they always find ways to win and seem to always be in the hunt when it comes to playoff time. In this day and age where teams will “copy cat” what is the successful combination, nobody in the NBA has really taken the Spurs blue print and run with it. Which is probably a good thing, most fans now a day don’t like the old school look to the spurs. Personally, I would watch more NBA if it looked like the Spurs style.

The San Antonio Spurs have become a dynasty, and I hope fans will take enjoyment in watching the likes of Duncan, Parker, and Ginobli, because when these guys are gone, it will be hard to ever replace some of the things we have seen from them. It is true what they say, you don’t enjoy things when they are there, but once their gone, you will long for the days when they were there. Instead of complaining about the style, or lack of superstars, let’s enjoy their achievements, even if your not a spurs fan(I’m not).
