We are 46 games into the NBA season and there has been one team who has quietly and almost by surprise, been winning games at a record breaking rate. While they are quietly winning games and widening their their game over everybody, this team has had little to no fan fare. Which would be the way Greg Popovich wants it. He likes to have his team quietly do what it is supposed to, and keep the spotlight away from them. But at some point, when your leading your division by 8 games and the overall conference standings by 6 games, someone is bound to take notice and start banging the drum for you.
While it seems unlikley that the Spurs will continue this pace for the remainder of the season, it is easy to say that if they do, they could go down as one of the greatest teams of all time. But to reach that plateau, their season would have to culminate in a championship. While they will not be able to touch the 95-96 Bulls team which won 72 regular season games, they will be able to get their name on that list if they can hold steady and continue to win at the same pace. But there is still half a season to go and things can happen that could affect a season.
The amazing thing about this team is they are winning with no real superstars that attract attention. Sure, they have Duncan, Ginobli and Parker, but there is no marquee player that makes every kid in every NBA city have to go see. But this has been the Spurs blue print for many years, and it continues to be successful. Can this team keep it going and win a championship? Only time will tell, but I will say this, I am going to keep my eye on this spurs team and see if they can keep it going.
