SMU makes statement win over UCF

Today was billed as the rematch from the 2010 Conference USA championship game, and SMU had never beaten the Central Florida Golden Knights. But on this day there seemed to be something special in the air around Gerald J. Ford Stadium. SMU came out from the early onset to take control of this game and when they took control they never relinquished. SMU would run off to an early lead and never have the game in doubt.

Today the Mustangs over powered their opponent and made sure that they would get their first win against this team. With quality performances by J.J. McDermott and a great special team’s performance from Richard Crawford the Mustangs were a team that looked unbeatable. Richard Crawford had a punt return of 92 yards, tying a record that was set back in 1952. Today was a special day on the hilltop… Because SMU made the statement that they are a team to deal with in Conference USA and in the Dallas – Ft. worth Metroplex.

This game was never in doubt but the score of 38-17 made it seem like a closer game than it really was. In the end June Jones said, ” he was happy with his teams play, but didn’t put any stock into making a statement early”. He was even quoted as saying,  “he didn’t remember the first half of the game” But quarterback J.J. McDermott said “This was a statement win for the team” and it was a sweet victory but, “Beating TCU on their field was sweeter”. SMU fans have a lot to look forward to with this team, because they are getting better every week. Receiver Cole Beasley is happy with 5-1, but “expected to be 6-0”. With attitude like that on this team, the only way to go is up.

  1. Wow. Great article Kody. We kept up with you yesterday as you were in the press box. We followed on FB and twitter. Good job. Glad you got the press pass and I know it had to be a great experience for you. If they keep winning the fans will come back. They got one “big time” coach. He will make it work on the hilltop.
