The Texas Rangers opened their season at home right at the start of the year with a three game series against the Philadelphia Phillies. While it was an inter-league match-up to open 2014, it also brought back some memorable players from years past. Namely guys like Cliff Lee and Marlon Byrd, which only made this series more entertaining to begin the season. And taking two out of three games in exciting fashion will build excitement for the rest of the season. 3/31 – Opening Day – Lee vs. Scheppers: Phillies 14-Rangers 10 – It was opening day and history was being made as Tanner Scheppers made his first start in the majors and is only the third player to ever make his starting debut on Opening day. While Scheppers looked shaky from the get go, the bats came alive and helped the Rangers put across 10 runs on the day. unfortunately for the Rangers, the Phillies put across 14 as the Rangers bullpen fell short against the Phillies line up.
- Rios went 3-5 with a HR, 3 RBI
- Martin went 2-4 with 2 RBI
4/1 – Burnett vs. Perez: Rangers 3-Phillies 2 -The second game of the season was a little more back to normal for the regular season, since all the hoopla had passed. The Rangers and Phillies played 5 scoreless innings and even after the scoring started, it was still a low scoring affair. The Rangers won their first replay challenge of the season and took a page from last seasons play book by winning in walk off fashion with Choo scoring from second on Beltre’s base hit in the bottom of the ninth.
Choo 2-3, scored winning run
- Beltre 2-4, 2 RBI’s, Game winning hit
4/2 – Kendrick vs. Ross: Rangers 4 – Phillies 3 – The rubber match of the series took place with another Rangers pitcher getting his first career start. Robbie Ross had a solid start for the Rangers throwing 96 pitches in 5 innings of work, but he gave up three runs, two of them earned. unfortunately for Ross, he wasn’t able to get the win as the bats didn’t come alive until late. The Rangers tied the game in the bottom of the 9th inning and got bases loaded. Then Papplebon walked in the winning run for the 2nd walk off win in a row.
- Moreland 2-4
- Martin 2-4, 2 RBI’s
- Choo 1-4, 1 RBI, Game winning walk
