North Texas Mean Green released their 2014 schedule recently and as I was looking at it, it struck me that the Mean Green has some interesting games on the horizon. They look to have a tougher road schedule than home, and entering their second season in Conference USA, they could be a dark horse candidate to win their division.
Their road schedule includes trips to Texas, Indiana, Alabama Birmingham, Rice, UT El Paso and UT San Antonio. Realistically looking at this road schedule the only game that doesn’t look winnable will be the Texas game, some would say Indiana also, but Indiana isn’t typically a tough football opponent. And the rest the opponents are pretty much the type of teams North Texas will stay competitive with and find a way to win.
The Home schedule is not going to be really tough because they have SMU, Louisiana Tech, Nicholls St, Southern Miss, Florida Atlantic and Florida International coming into Apogee stadium. The SMU game should be fun because it will be for Dallas area bragging rights and could help settle some recruiting races. Obviously these will be very good games and it would surprise me if there are more than two losses in this bunch.
After finishing up the 2013 season with an impressive victory in the Heart of Dallas Bowl against UNLV, there will be some high expectations in Denton as they will want to see this team win eight or more games again and possibly win the conference. Dan McCarney has this team on the right track and they could be a force to be reckoned with in the next few years, if they already aren’t.
Here is the full schedule if you want to look at how each game breaks down. A full preview will be posted once we get closer to the start of the 2014 season.
