Mean Green Soar to victory in the rain

Saturday afternoon was a special day in Denton, as the North Texas Mean Green finished off their season with an impressive victory over the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders at Apogee Stadium. While the weather was a mess and made for some sloppy and sometimes comical conditions, the game was placed squarely on the shoulders of senior running back Lance Dunbar, who led the mean green to a huge victory.

Lance Dunbar chose his final game in a Mean Green uniform to soar like an eagle and finished up the day with both career and game records. Dunbar broke the all time rushing record which was previously held by Patrick Cobb. Cobb, who was in attendance for the game told Dunbar before the game he wanted him to smash the record. And Smash it he did, on his way to a game high 313 yards on 40 carries. Needless to say crisp blocking by the offensive line and a great game plan put him in a position to do so.

This was a complete game for the Mean Green, and by far the best they have played all season. Mean Green Senior Brandon Apunku said “this was a complete game and a dream come true”. There is no better way to send off a group of seniors than to destroy an opponent 59-7. It was a special day at Apogee because it was senior day. The icing on the cake for everyone there was it became historic as school records were broken. As a sports nut I was thrilled to see this historic achievement in person.

Coach Dan McCarney has instilled great pride and respect for the game into this group of young men. Coach McCarney is the right man for the job. He is building a great program in Denton. This victory will be the cornerstone for the building blocks of the future. Finishing this year with 5 wins is a vast improvement over years past. You could feel the sense of pride and camaraderie in the crowd and the players. Hopefully there will be greater expectations and anticipation for next year. With this new program I know this team can handle those expectations! I realize only time will tell, but I can assure you they are headed in the right direction and led by the right man.

If you are an ex student, a student or just like good football, put it on your schedule and go see the Mean Green in person next year. We all need to get behind the team and show our support with attendance. The stadium is beautiful. The team is well coached and quality college football is being played right here in the DFW area.
