The North Texas Mean Green joined Conference USA this season and were not expected to finish higher than 5th by most experts. But when the season gets going, things can change at a moment’s notice and things did change for the best results for the surprise out of Denton. It started out how it was supposed to with North Texas winning games they were supposed to, then losing games nobody thought they had a chance to win. But the season would seem to take a special turn when the Mean Green defeated Ball State at home to get their first win nobody saw them getting.
Then October came around and the Mean Green reeled off five straight wins in their Conference USA schedule and all of a sudden there was a buzz around town and people realized this team has hit bowl eligible for the first time since 2004, but they didn’t stop there, talked changed to winning their division and with two games left they had a chance to lock it up, but UT- San Antonio stole a victory away from the Mean green and took their destiny out of their hands.
But that didn’t dampen the spirits of the team, they needed one more win to hit eight wins on the season, and that was now their goal. The Mean Green would finish their season off with 42-10 win in Tulsa and now sit eagerly awaiting the invite from one of the Bowl tie ins for Conference USA. Those tie ins are the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl, Beef O’Brady’s Bowl St. Petersburg, Sheraton Hawai’i Bowl, Military Bowl, AutoZone Liberty Bowl and Heart of Dallas Bowl.
Obviously for a team who hasn’t been to a bowl game since 2004, either of these locations will be a great experience for the team and something to build on for the future. With Coach McCarney at the helm, the expectations will now increase and with the crop of players he has in Denton, the Conference Championship seems to be in reach for the Mean Green.
