Last night I was able to personally cover the University of North Texas vs. LSU game from the “Super Pit” in Denton, TX. This was billed as a chance for LSU to get revenge for the upset which occurred in Baton Rouge last season as the “Mean Green” defeated the Tigers on their home court. You could tell from the opening tip North Texas wasn’t going to lay down and let LSU run over them. In fact the Mean Green were not intimidated by the team who just knocked off Marquette.
The crowd was electric and ready to explode. For a Thursday night game with school out, there was a great turn out and a lot of enthusiasm. They were rowdy and loud. It was obvious they wanted to take home court advantage for their Mean Green and make this a boisterous home advantage for a very young but talented Mean Green team. From the early onset, it looked like UNT was going to set the pace early and make the roof come off of the Pit. However, LSU kept finding ways to keep it close and kept tying up the game. It was tied 35 to 35 at the half, and then the game turned sour for the Mean Green.
LSU came out with a renewed determination and made sure they were going to dominate in the paint. This lead to problems for this North Texas team, as they were unable to penetrate and get points from the inside. They were also blocked out on rebounding and had few second shot opportunities. Shooting horribly from the perimeter would eventually bury North Texas and give LSU the extra boost to make a few 2nd half runs. LSU ended up running off with game. The Final score was 67-58 at the Pit, and it was viewed by an outstanding 6,838 fans. It was an impressive crowd with so many people out of town for the Holiday.
North Texas is a young team with a lot of potential. This may be a bump in the road, but it is valuable experience which will benefit them in the long season and well into conference play.
North Texas has an excellent coach in Johnny Jones, who will get them on the right path. They have the makings of a good team and should be competitive in the near future, especially in their conference. With a little luck and some big game experience for their young players they should make their mark. Please be sure to follow me on Twitter and Facebook
