University of North Texas head basketball coach Johnny Jones just recently won his 200th game as a head coach. He has been at UNT for 11 years and has been a driving force behind a culture change in Denton. Jones has taken the school from a fall back option, to a destination for some quality recruits. He is full of energy, gives his full support to the program, the players and is known and respected as a strong recruiter. He is also respected by his peers and viewed as a players coach.
Under Jones the Mean Green has made two NCAA tournament appearances and was one shot away from two other trips during his tenure. Also toss in the fact his teams have won at least 20 games a season the last 5 years. Anyone can see the improvement in the program. He is a great leader and will eventually take them to the promise land.
UNT recently extended his contract because of his success and leadership skills. Hopefully he can continue to build a program in Denton and won’t be lured away by a bigger school. Keep your eye on the Mean Green, because they are continually improving and could be a surprise team in the “big dance” one of these days.
It is very impressive what he has done with this basketball team in a football crazed region. Fans are hoping he will stick around and continue to take UNT to unprecedented levels. By the way, the “Super Pit” is one hot venue to take in a game. I’ve been to several games recently and good things are happening in Denton.
Here’s to UNT hanging on to Johnny Jones and also heartfelt congratulations on the milestone of his 200th victoryPlease be sure to follow me on Twitter and Facebook
