Early look at SMU Mustangs 2014 Schedule

SMU MustangsMuch like North Texas Mean Green, SMU also just released their 2014 schedule to the public. While their schedule is front loaded with some tough games at the start, the middle and back end of the schedule look to be manageable and I am sure June Jones and staff would like to see an improvement in the win column this year, since last year ended with such a down note. And for the second year in a row, SMU will deal with a change in their conference opponents since the American Conference has had some teams bolt for other conferences, but at the same time they welcome in some former Conference USA opponents as well.

This season SMU begins their season with back to back games on the road, even though the second game will be close enough to entice fans to attend the game. SMU’s road schedule includes Baylor, North Texas, East Carolina, Tulsa, Central Florida and Connecticut to end the season. Right off the bat it looks like it will be tough sledding with Baylor and a very improved North Texas team. But the remaining games on the schedule look manageable and could be wins for the Mustangs as long as they are able to hit their stride early to improve on Last year. While there aren’t any “Gimmie” games, there are some which SMU could easily win, but even games that look like wins can turn into a loss.

The home schedule will once again prove to be challenging as the Mustangs welcome Texas A&M, TCU, Cincinnati, Memphis, USF, and Houston to Ford Stadium this year. If they can win majority of these games, it will help their season round out on a positive note. But once again, there are not real easy wins this season at home or on the road. Obviously it is too early to know how these teams will shape out, but it would be too much of a stretch to see the Mustangs be in position for a bowl bid once again this year.

Here is the full schedule; I will work on previews about the team and schedule as we get closer to season.
