Dirk Nowitzki passes Oscar Robinson

Dirk NowitzkiDirk Nowitzki is a fan favorite in Dallas, but he really doesn’t get a whole lot of respect nationally because he plays a more European style in the NBA. But Tuesday night in Utah, he passed Oscar Robinson on the All-Time scoring list and is now one of the top 10. Will this grab more respect for Dirk? Probably not, it will take a lot more for most NBA fans to really give Dirk his due.¬†

But he will always be beloved in Dallas and this is just giving credence to the fact, he is a solid player who has done so much in the league without really being part of a super star team. Sure, he has had Steve Nash, Jason Kidd and a cast of others who have helped him. He has a championship ring, but most people around the league won’t give respect until he has multiple rings.

Dirk Nowitzki has been the one constant on the Mavericks, besides Mark Cuban, since he was drafted. Even his head coach Rick Carlisle is “in awe” of his accomplishment and Carlisle is a 30 year NBA veteran. Dirk Nowitzki is a once in generation type player, but unlike players that preceded him, he has done it without any major national fan fare.

Dirk may not have the same game as Michael Jordan, Lebron James or any real super star of years past. But in Dallas he is as big as they come, and he is beloved and respected because he has done everything he can to stay a Maverick. Now the remaining question is, how much higher will he go? He may could make it as high as sixth or seventh if he only lasts two or three more years. It is unlikely he gets much higher that because he is nearing the end of his career.
