The University of North Texas is on the cusp of improving their athletic footprint dramatically. But for anyone who has been paying attention, this isn’t a surprise move. The school made a commitment back in 2001 to make all of their athletics viable across the board. Since then they have upgraded or built new facilities on and around campus. The crown jewel being the new 79 million dollar football stadium that opened last season.
It has been announced by the university, they are about to join Conference USA. The conference has been working to regain a foothold in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex since SMU announced that it will be moving to the Big East in 2013. The addition of the North Texas Mean Green will not only give the conference a footprint in the Dallas area, but it will also bring in one of the universities on the rise.
North Texas is no longer willing to just be that “other” Dallas university, they are ready to take the next step and show everyone that they want to compete for conference championships and bowl berths. The Mean Green aren’t ready to kick in the door and win a championship in the major sports, but every sport for the university is improving each year. This conference move is a win for the school, but also a big win for the conference. This should make everyone happy.
